2021-05-18 Making Virtual Wishes A Reality

CapCHI May 2021 event image

How do you get past strict hospital privacy policies and infection control requirements so you can virtually grant last wishes for end-of-life patients? How does someone with Parkinson’s select a virtual reality video if they can’t grip the controller or keep their head steady to use the head-gaze feature of a VR headset? What does Schitt’s Creek, a group of nuns, and a super-charged monster truck have in common?

Find the answers to these and many more real-life challenges that David Parker tackled when pioneering VR for healthcare and palliative use.

Not only will you learn about the possibilities and limitations of Virtual Reality, you will see first hand how to adapt (and sometimes ignore) key UX practices in an immersive space for truly heartfelt and inspiring outcomes. Through a highly interactive, emotionally charged, and media rich keynote, David will demonstrate how he quickly adapted current consumer technologies to improve the quality of life for patients, family members, and healthcare workers, all for the better.

Wishplay is a positive thinking company that uses Virtual Reality to grant wishes for patients in hospitals or individuals with a life limiting illness. David’s ultimate goal is to let anyone anywhere experience the world, no matter their condition or circumstances. When not granting wishes David can be found adventuring with his family in the Gatineau, most assuredly with a 360 camera in hand.
