Join Courtney Claessens (Senior Product Manager) and Brian Hendrick (Lead Service Designer and Product Manager) from the COVID Alert team, as they share the guiding principles that went into designing and building the Government of Canada’s COVID-19 exposure notification service.
Using principles such as accessibility and trust, Courtney and Brian will discuss how three multidisciplinary teams built a multi-region service in 45 days that helps alert users if they may have been exposed to COVID-19 before they are showing symptoms, allowing them to take action and help slow the spread of the virus. They’ll also share details on how they continue to iterate on and improve the service.
E-textiles (electronic textiles) are interactive textiles with sensing and actuating properties. Imagine textiles that can sense touch, change colour, play music, or shift into different shapes, all while remaining soft and flexible. The unique aspect of e-textiles is that these fibres and materials can be combined with textile crafting techniques to make technologies that fit seamlessly into our lives, making them invisible.
Interactive textiles might sound like science fiction, but Lee has been exploring how artists and crafters can use e-textiles for their expressive and creative potentials. In this talk, Lee will go over some of the projects she has worked on and how individuals can craft soft technologies for their own needs.

You are invited to a special evening with Dr. Benjamin Roebuck, Research Chair of the Victimology Research Centre at Algonquin College. Ben has been invited to discuss findings from his collaborative study with the University of Ottawa that examines services that support victims of violence. As per his report:
“Understanding how people interact with service providers, the justice system, and other supports is central to exploring their process of navigating and negotiating the adversity that violence has introduced to their lives. Learning from what is helpful and unhelpful along the way becomes important to designing responses to violence that can better support resilience.”

We are excited to kick-off the 2020–2021 season with a trivia networking event. The evening will feature an introduction to the CapCHI executive team, followed by an overview of the fantastic season we have lined up. Then, we will break out into several rooms to get to know each other, and test our wits with a round of carefully crafted UX brain teasers.
The World Design Organization (WDO) recently partnered with IBM and Design for America to create a global mobilization effort in response to COVID-19. Their 24-hour COVID-19 Design Challenge had teams from around the world tackle seven identified problem spaces. The second round will refine proposed recommendations.
You are invited to a two-hour design jam that will dovetail into the WDO COVID-19 Design Challenge. Hosted by our very own Hala Hawa and Raquel Alves, and facilitated by Kevin Grignon from IBM Ottawa, our two-hour event will further examine outcomes from the WDO initiative.

You are invited to a panel discussion on ethics in user-experience research and design. Professionals from government, not-for-profit, academic, and private sectors have been invited to discuss ethics from their perspective. Following these short talks, we will break out into virtual rooms to discuss specific themes in smaller groups. Afterwards, we will return to the main room to for a moderated discussion, when we will open the floor to everyone.
Several new businesses have been invited to present their product or service to the CapCHI community. Each entrepreneur will have five minutes to introduce their company and underline some of the key challenges they have faced in the first few years since launch. Following each presentation will be a short question period, and later in the evening there will be time to meet the presenters to discuss their challenges in greater detail.
Welcome back! Let’s start off the decade on a positive note by getting to know another amazing local community group: Ottawa Civic Tech! Members of Ottawa Civic Tech have been gathering and working on projects together for four years. During that time, they’ve fostered civic engagement between citizens, elected officials, and public servants; hosted over a hundred talks, including by a number of internationally renowned speakers, and; developed several unique civic-minded projects, such as the Meeting Cost Calculator, DemocracyKit, Is This Blocked in My Department, and Big Little Contracting.
This social mixer will be an informal way for the communities to meet and get to know each other. We’ll start the evening with a short introductory presentation from each group, and then leave the night open for mostly unstructured conversation. We’ll have a few back-up activities and games on hand to keep conversations moving, if necessary.
